Take Care of Yourself This Year — Remember Self-Care

How do you plan to take care of yourself this year? This may include physical ideas like diet and exercise, but think about how you take care ofTake a break yourself emotionally and mentally too. What do you include in your schedule for self-care? First of all, yes, you must plan for it. In our busy lives we often forget about ourselves as we take care of others in our lives, whether that includes parents, children or spouse. Before we know it another day is over and we sit numbly watching television because we are too tired to do anything else and fall into bed exhausted. So schedule some self-care into the calendar with the kid activities and grocery shopping. See the picture “50 Ways to Take a Break” for some ideas to look after yourself. Self-care may also include an energy treatment, a naturopath visit or spending time with friends or reading a book.

We need to take care of ourselves emotionally. Don’t do things that don’t feel right as mentioned in the picture “12 Steps to Self-Care”. Also speak your mind in a positive manner so that your feelings don’t stay submerged and eat away at you. Emotions and thoughts are energy and if you don’t release the emotions that cause you harm they may cause health concerns later on. And as the old saying goes, what goes around comes around. Radiate happiness, love, gratitude and joy to continually receive. The word radiate reminds me of Jack Johnson’s song by the same name. Check out the lyrics.

Affirmation TreeSo instead of making a resolution that may be hard to keep, perhaps make an affirmation such as those found in the affirmation tree by Paul Foreman. See his website for more mindmap ideas for happiness or relaxation. Whether you call it an affirmation or inspiration or aspiration, keep yourself in mind and remember your self-care. Enjoy some quotes about self-care and especially read the poem about why you need to take care of yourself.

“Love yourself first, and everything else falls in line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”

– Lucille Ball

He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope, has everything.

– Arabian Proverb

“Don’t sacrifice yourself too much, because if you sacrifice too much there’s nothing else you can give and nobody will care for you.”

– Karl Lagerfeld

”Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to ourselves that we would give to others.”

– Christopher Germer

A Blessing for One Who Is Exhaunsted

When the rhythm of the heart becomes hectic,
Time takes on the strain until it breaks;
Then all the unattended stress falls in
On the mind like an endless, increasing weight,

The light in the mind becomes dim.
Things you could take in your stride before
Now become laborsome events of will.

Weariness invades your spirit.
Gravity begins falling inside you,
Dragging down every bone.

The ride you never valued has gone out.
And you are marooned on unsure ground.
Something within you has closed down;
And you cannot push yourself back to life.

You have been forced to enter empty time.
The desire that drove you has relinquished.
There is nothing else to do now but rest
And patiently learned to receive the self
You have forsaken for the race of days.

At first your thinking will darken
And sadness take over like listless weather.
The flow of unwept tears will frighten you.

You have traveled too fast over false ground;
Now your soul has come to take you back.

Take refuge in your senses, open up
To all the small miracles you rushed through.

Become inclined to watch the way of rain
When it falls slow and free.

Imitate the habit of twilight,
Taking time to open the well of color
That fostered the brightness of day.

Draw alongside the silence of stone
Until its calmness can claim you.
Be excessively gentle with yourself.

Stay clear of those vexed in spirit.
Learn to linger around someone of ease
Who feels they have all the time in the world.

Gradually, you will return to yourself,
Having learned a new respect for your heart
And the joy that dwells far within slow time.

The Book Nook with Sarah

I quite enjoyed being interviewed by Sarah Hilton this morning for her Rogers show,

The Book Nook with Sarah. Stay tuned for the show to be aired this fall.

We discussed my book Getting Well: Mind, Body & Spirit and Healing Your Energy Body.

What is Your Energy Body?

Each person needs to have strategies to cope with the stressors in life as they arise to ensure a balanced life style. In addition to good nutrition, exercise and appropriate amount of sleep, I encourage people to take good care of their energy bodies for good health. So what is our energy body? Everything in the universe is made of energy and so are we, as humans. From the atoms and molecules that make up our body to the chemical reactions that occur to keep us alive, there is “energy” of many forms in our bodies. Eastern cultures have believed for thousands of years that there is a life energy flowing through our body that keeps us alive. It has been called many names: chi or ki or prana.

“Health is the free and balanced flow of chi. If the flow is disrupted, it can decrease the functioning of organs and tissues of the physical body, causing illness. Overall, the body is able to heal itself, so any assistance helping the flow of energy allows the body to help itself. There is not only a physical link from the energy body to health, but also an emotional, mental and spiritual link. Negative thoughts and feelings can also disrupt the flow of chi and will eventually manifest as an illness in the physical body if not released.” (Quote from Getting Well Mind, Body & Spirit, coauthored by Wanda Davis)

In my chapter, titled “Healing Your Energy Body”, I explain the different energy pathways in the body that have been known for thousands of years and understood in treatments used in traditional Chinese medicine or acupuncture. Healing the Energy Body is holistic in nature since the whole person is considered in treatment and not just a specific symptom.

So we all have this energy system where our life energy flows through our body, which also produces an energy field around us, all of which is part of our Energy Body. At times of stress, illness, pain or fatigue our “energy may be low” and we may need a “boost of energy”. Energy blockages may occur in areas of pain or injury and different holistic treatments can help remove the energy blockages to restore balance and harmony in the body. It is beneficial to have balanced energy flow to promote whatever type of healing is needed.

There are many ways to heal the energy body. Deep breathing is a great way to start healing your energy body. Whenever one is feeling stressed, the first thing one can do is to take a deep breath and be aware of one’s own body reactions to the stressor. Another method is energy therapies. “Energy-based therapies realign the energy field for optimal physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health, so having a means to affect the energy body can benefit our lives on many levels.” (Quote from Getting Well Mind, Body & Spirit)

Examples of energy therapies include Reiki, Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch™.

All of these types of treatments will reduce stress, reduce pain and promote relaxation and promote healing of the body, mind and spirit.  All use light or “near body” touch and the client remains fully clothed, lying on a massage table or sitting on a chair. With any type of treatment the relaxation response in the body is activated and when the muscles relax, more healing can occur. All these techniques have a positive effect on the energy field of the client. There is evidence-based research for each of these methods and anyone can learn to treat him or herself.

“The energy body is thus a vital part of the human body and its health affects the health of the individual.” (Quote from Getting Well Mind, Body & Spirit) Ways to improve your health include reducing stress in your life, meditating, eating properly, exercising and, of course, getting an energy healing treatment. Remember that each of us has universal life force energy flowing through our bodies and that we can help balance that energy for better health, improving our lives at both work and home.

Are You Feeling Grounded?

Are you feeling stressed? Tired? Feeling overwhelmed? If so, you may not be Grounded.  You have heard the word being tossed around, but do you really know what it means? And I’m not talking about being sent to your room. In a sense it can be compared to the electrical grounding wire and having that connection to the ground.

Being Grounded means being connected and being present with the Universe, the Earth and all of our surroundings. It means not being in your head and thinking and worrying all the time. Being Grounded allows you to be aware of your body and its needs. You can reenergize or get rid of excess unneeded energy. You become more aware of your emotions and have more balance and control of them. Being Grounded means you are less stressed and better able to cope with those stressors that come along.

How do I get Grounded? You can make lifestyle changes that will help you stay more grounded such as eating certain foods, drinking more water, spending time in nature and with pets and getting exercise. Once you are aware that you are not grounded, the next step is to figure out a way to be in better balance. Self-care activities you can do include breathing exercises, visualizations and meditation, exercises such as Tai Chi and Qigong and self-treatments with energy therapies. Of course, getting a healing energy treatment from a qualified practitioner will help immensely.

So becoming aware of when you are not grounded and not in balance is the first step and the second step is to do something about it. Being Grounded is an important part of being healthy. Learn how to get grounded by talking to a health and wellness practitioner who can help. Better yet, come to my interactive workshop where I teach you self-care techniques to become grounded. Next workshop is in London on Tues. April 16 at Melekare and at Heartfelt Healing Centre in Exeter on Sat. April 27 at 12 pm.  Register by calling 226-374-9045. And Be Grounded!
